Explore Osaka's older quarters in a photowalk tour

Explore Osaka's older quarters in a photowalk tour

If at all interested, I offer photowalk tours for up to two people around lesser-visited parts of Osaka.

I'll tailor the walk to your needs, but it'll essentially take in the city’s older, unvarnished neighbourhoods. We'll seek out fading shopfronts, retro details and traces of the fast-disappearing Showa era, while also catching glimpses of everyday life.

Straying from the well-trodden paths, we can spend half a day or a full one taking in various places of interest. Happy to go at a comfortable pace and follow whatever catches our attention.

If that sounds like your kind of experience, feel free to contact me, Trev, via the form at the end of this page. Alternatively, email me at japansnapping@outlook.com or DM me via Instagram.

Arnold, New York : “My wife and I recently had the distinct pleasure of having Trev show us Osaka in a gracious, insightful and unique way. We avoided the usual tourist spots and gained a wonderful perspective on the ‘hidden features’ of this vibrant city. His knowledge and caring were quite special. If you really want to understand what makes Osaka so fascinating, then Trev is a must! Thank you, Trev.”

Tokyo Times’ Lee Chapman : “Trev’s knowledge of the grittier, tucked away and most interesting parts of Osaka is second to none. In fact, it was Trev taking me round Osaka many years ago that first sparked my interest in Japan’s second city — one that has since developed into a deep appreciation. And yet even now, after countless visits on my own, I’m still enjoying those first areas he took me to. He also still finds new treats to show me every time we meet up.

On top of all that, he’s a lovely fella and a wonderful companion to walk the streets with. I’m also lucky enough to have called him a close friend for two decades, which in so many ways says more about the kind of person he is than anything I can write.”

FAQs

Do I need an expensive camera?

Not at all – a smartphone will do, if that’s all you have. I usually wander around with a Sony camera and a 35mm lens, but anything’s fine. The best advice I can give is to bring a camera you’re familiar with rather than a new one just out of the box. That way you’ll spend more time looking around rather than at your camera controls!

Can any level of photographer join?

Sure. It’s more of a photowalk than a workshop, but if you’d like some tips on how or what to shoot, I’m more than happy to help. And if you're confident with your camera, I’ll be there to offer ideas, suggestions, and guidance throughout the walk.

Is a lot of walking involved?

A fair bit, so you'll want to wear comfy shoes. Having said that, if you'd like to limit the walking, I can devise a route where we do less of it, or we can include more breaks.

Do we go at a steady pace?

We’ll go at your pace and hopefully we can cover everything that we plan to see. If at any point you need a break, we can stop for a coffee or sit in a park. We certainly won't be rushing, so there'll be plenty of time to take in a scene or wait for a photo-worthy moment!

What if it rains?

We can still go! Parts of the walk will be under cover so we'll be sheltered at least some of the time. However, if a typhoon is forecast, we don’t want to risk being blown into a neighbouring prefecture, so in that case we’ll have to postpone the photowalk for our own safety. There may be a chance to reschedule — we can talk about that.

For the half-day photowalk, will we start in the morning or the afternoon?

Ideally, we’ll start in the morning, as places are livelier then. Still, we can work out a plan that suits your needs.

Are there any extra monetary costs?

Only for any food/drink you buy along the way, plus we might take a couple of short train rides between locations, depending on the route that we take.

The Hanshin Tigers baseball team is massive in Osaka. This guy may be its biggest fan.
